I just started reading Daughter Father Canoe by Rob Kesserlring, a story about paddling the far north with his 14 year old daughter. He says, "How do you let your children know how much you love them? Can they understand their quirks, vulnerabilities and mistakes make them even more deeply cherished? ...our lives pass like the flash of a falling star. A little zap of energy and then we vanish. All that lasts is what we pass on to our children and those we love." I went on many camping trips and outdoor excursions with Eli as a child and a particularly memorable two-week canoe trip when he was 18. It wasn't always roses and sunshine but I'll cherish the times together. Someone once reminded me that life is for the living. I don't expect to ever fully recover from this experience but I am trying to embrace life and remember that it is for the living.
I've created a tribute to Eli here: http://www.realworldlearning.info/a-fathers-tribute.html
