Why You Haven't Heard From Me

In case you are wondering why you haven't seen much here, via Twitter, or on our Facebook page it is because I have had to deal with a family tragedy that I wish on no one. My eldest son Eli died in a car accident January 31st. It has been the most painful thing I have ever experienced and I am just now trying to slowly reengage. I've been doing some updates to our website (mostly regarding the Common Core Standards) and hope to restart my wilderness tips in the coming week. I'm very grateful to family, friends, colleagues, and the entire community of Saranac Lake for their love and support over the last month.

I just started reading Daughter Father Canoe by Rob Kesserlring, a story about paddling the far north with his 14 year old daughter. He says, "How do you let your children know how much you love them? Can they understand their quirks, vulnerabilities and mistakes make them even more deeply cherished? ...our lives pass like the flash of a falling star. A little zap of energy and then we vanish. All that lasts is what we pass on to our children and those we love." I went on many camping trips and outdoor excursions with Eli as a child and a particularly memorable two-week canoe trip when he was 18. It wasn't always roses and sunshine but I'll cherish the times together. Someone once reminded me that life is for the living. I don't expect to ever fully recover from this experience but I am trying to embrace life and remember that it is for the living.

I've created a tribute to Eli here: http://www.realworldlearning.info/a-fathers-tribute.html

My thoughts are with you Jack. This is life, isn't it. So beautiful when we are with our beloved...so harsh when they go away so young. It is our wisdom and our perseverance that keep us going. Hope that you and your family will hang on to them.
