Designed for Middle and High School teachers of Mathematics who want to use a collaborative, problem-based approach to learning that will help their students to master curricular content while developing the skills needed to do well in the NYS assessments

Participants in this session will explore the following questions:

Workshop Title: Social Studies in Action: Collaborative, Problem-based Learning in the Social Studies Classroom

Designed for Middle and High School teachers of the Social Studies who want to use a collaborative, problem - based approach to learning that will help their students to master curricular content while developing the skills needed to do well in school and life beyond.

Participants in this session will explore the following questions:

¨ What kinds of social studies content are appropriate to address using collaborative, problem-based learning?

¨ How can we make sure that students directly address the NYS Standards while they are involved in collaborative, problem-based learning?

¨ How can we integrate a range of "content" areas through the collaborative, problem-based approach?

Workshop Title: Building a Safe Classroom "Community" at the Elementary Level

Designed for K-6 teachers who want to examine and experience a variety of practical strategies for building a physically and emotionally "safe" classroom community with their students.

Participants in this session will explore the following questions:

¨ What do we mean by a "safe" classroom community?

¨ What are some specific strategies we can use to build such a classroom community?

¨ How do we deal with students who have difficulty working with or being accepted by others?

Workshop Title: Beyond Performance Indicators: Learning to Assess Skill Development as it Happens!

Designed for all classroom teachers who want to learn how to target and track specific skills from the NYS Standards for student development.

Participants in this session will explore the following issues:

¨ How do good coaches help players develop their skills?

¨ How can I target and track skill development in my own classroom context?

¨ What kinds of basic tools and techniques do I need to get started? How will I know what to "look for/listen for" in my students?

Workshop Title: Developing Higher Order Thinking Skills (H.O.T.S.) in my Students!

Designed for all classroom teachers who want to develop a classroom environment in which students are constantly challenged to develop their skills of analysis, synthesis, and evaluation.

Participants in session will address the following issues:

¨ What are the "higher order thinking skills?" Why do I want my students to develop them?"

¨ What do these HOTS skills "look like/sound like" as they are happening?

¨ What specific classroom practices can I employ that will encourage the development of HOTS as part of the every day process of my classroom?

Workshop Title: Processing Student Experience: Reflecting on our Learning

Designed to help teachers develop specific classroom practices that will help their students become reflective learners.

Participants in session will explore the following questions:

¨ What does it mean to "process" our experience"? Why might is it important to include "processing" as an integral part of every classroom experience?

¨ What specific classroom practices can I use to help my student process their experience more effectively?

Workshop Title: Engaging our Students: Enhancing Student Ownership of their Learning

Designed for K-12 teachers who want to examine a range of principles and practices that can improve the level of student participation in the process of learning.

Participants in this session will explore the following questions:

¨ What principles and practices do leading educational journals recommend we adopt in our classrooms?

¨ How can these recommended practices be linked directly to the NYS Standards?

Workshop Title: Building the Bridge: Connecting Library Media Specialists and Classroom Teachers, to the NYS Standards

Designed for K-12 Library Media Specialists who want to collaborate with classroom teachers in lesson design aimed at moving a full range of students toward the NYS Standards.

Participants in this session will explore the following questions:

¨ Why should Library Media Specialists be concerned about the NYS Standards?

¨ What implications do the NYS Standards pose for the classroom practice of teachers? How might these implications impact the professional practice of Library Media Specialists?

¨ How can the NYS Standards be used to foster Librarian-Teacher collaboration in lesson design?

Workshop Title: Working & Learning Together: Building our Capacity for Collaborative Problem-Solving

Designed for teachers and administrators who want to develop the capacity of their students or staff to engage in successful collaborative work.

Participants will emerge from this hands-on workshop with an enhanced capacity to:

Recognize the characteristics of the four collaborative decision-making styles,

Use specific tools & techniques to develop and maintain collaborative teamwork,

Use specific tools for planning, facilitating, and debriefing collaborative problem-solving

Workshop Title: Challenging My Staff: Developing the Capacity of a Staff to Solve its Problems Collaboratively.

Designed for administrators who want to help their teaching staff "come together" to solve its own problems. Participants in this session will explore and experience a range of tools and techniques associated with successful collaborative problem - solving and the EBD classroom model.

Participants in this session will explore the following questions:

Why would I want my staff to be better at collaborative problem solving?

What are some specific tools and techniques I can use now to build our capacity to solve problems collaboratively?

How might we assess our progress as a collaborative problem-solving team? How will we know if we are getting better?

Workshop Title: How am I doing? - Assessing Student Growth Over Time

Designed for middle and high school teachers who want to learn how to use a variety of assessment tools (rubrics, etc.) to track student growth in knowledge and skill over time.

Participants in this session will address each of the following issues:

What do we mean by assessment/feedback over time?

How do I put together a useful rubric that will help me track student growth over time?

How can I collect the data necessary to support my assessment of student work?

Workshop Title: Making sense of SCANS and C-DOS

Designed to help K-12 classroom teachers understand the implications of the SCANS Report (Secretary's Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills) and the NYS C-DOS (Career Development and Occupational Studies) Standard for their classroom practice.

Participants in this session will explore the following questions:

What is SCANS and C-DOS? What do these documents actually say?

What do the contents of these documents imply for our classroom practice?

What are some specific classroom strategies that I can put in place to address SCANS and C-DOS in my classroom while still meeting the other NYS Standards?

Workshop Title: Student Leadership Development

This one or two day workshop is designed for high school student leaders who want to develop their leadership and decision making skills and take a more active role in school issues.

Participants in this session will explore the following questions:

What is leadership and what does it look like in the high school setting?

What is collaboration and what role does it play in getting things done?

How does our decision-making style impact our leadership?

Why is it so hard to lead?

What skills do good leaders have?

What would school be like if there were more student leaders?

Workshop Title: Student Athlete Leadership Development

Designed for student athletes who have demonstrated leadership as part of an athletic team and want to play a role in helping their team develop the values of sportsmanship, character and ethics as well as finding success in the win-loss column.

Participants in this session will explore the following questions:

What does it mean to be a student athlete leader?

What can you do to help your team?

Why are character and ethics important?

How can we address the controversial issues surrounding sports?

How does the desire to win impact our behavior?
