Staff Bios/Institute Coordinators Newsletter/Discussion Group

Education By DesignTM is a classroom approach developed through the contributions of hundreds of kindergarten - college educators in association with Antioch New England Graduate School, Keene, NH. The primary staff development vehicle of Education By DesignTM is an "institute" wherein teachers with the guidance of EBD Institute Coordinators explore the EBD classroom model. What is the EBD Classroom Model? The EBD classroom model is a comprehensive teaching methodology grounded in experiential and collaborative learning. This approach moves students toward N.Y.S. Learning Standards by engaging them in increasingly complex, collaborative, problem-solving challenges. Through these challenges, students master traditional content while simultaneously developing the essential skills and dispositions (C-DOS Standards) required for success in school, the workplace and life. How many types of EBD training are there? EBD has three levels of Institutes. The level I institute is six days in length and the level II and III are each three days in length.
An EBD institute is an intense, highly interactive, six-day staff-development workshop. EBD provides three levels of training during which up to 22 participants experientially explore the EBD classroom model.
Teachers trained in EBD methodology learn to:
· Move students toward N.Y.S. Learning Standards
· Plan meaningful learning experiences that take full advantage of block scheduling
· Turn their existing classroom curriculum into student-centered problems to solve
· Challenge students to develop and meet high standards of quality for content, product and process
· Assess more authentically
· Make connections between learning in school and life outside of school
· Transform traditional classrooms into democratic classrooms
· Create "safe" classroom environments
· Motivate students intrinsically by changing the nature of their classroom work How are Level I Institutes "delivered"? There are two types of level I Institutes:
· The 3-3 institute is taught over three days then teachers go back and implement what they have learned. In approximately three months there is another three days of training that follows up on their classroom experience
· The 5-1 institute is taught over five days with one day of follow-up approximately three months later Level I - Participants will:
1. have a novice understanding of the EBD Model and methods to implement it
2. be able to use a variety of strategies for building classroom community
3. be able to turn curriculum into small group challenges connected to state standards
4. be able to provide students with appropriate assessment/feedback using check list rubrics based on criteria for quality Level II - Participants will:
1. have an expanded understanding of the EBD Model
2. be able to turn curriculum into linked challenges one of which is large group
3. have an increased repertoire of tools and techniques for building and maintaining classroom community
4. be able to create three-stage rubrics based on student work Level III - Participants will
1. have a more sophisticated understanding of the EBD Model
2. be able to turn the entire
curriculum into a series of linked challenges
3. be able to track student growth over time using multi-stage rubrics Over the last fifteen years EBD teachers have integrated the latest educational philosophy and research into our classroom model. EBD is strongly influenced by the following:
· Brain-Based Learning
· Cooperative & Collaborative Learning
· Constructivism
· Authentic Assessment
· Howard Gardner's Multiple Intelligences
