Women in the Outdoors? My Goodness!

This is the second in my series of old magazine articles on Paul Petzoldt or in this case the National Outdoor Leadership School. This article appeared in Field and Stream in 1968. It was written by Raye Price, later Raye Carleson Ringholz. I served with Raye for a number of years on the Board of Directors of the Wilderness Education Association. I remember her telling me about this article but I had never seen it until this year at the WEA auction. As I remember Raye was a bit embarrassed by the sexist nature of the article but you have to remember that women's courses were unheard of at this time. In fact it would be a number of years later before coed courses would be considered. I remember how excited I was to be in the first coed dorm at SUNY Cortland in 1969 and that my first NOLS course was coed in 1970. What was really radical at the time was to have a coed tent partner for a good portion of my Mt. McKinley expedition. So as you read this keep in mind the time period it was written.

This article obviously references Paul but also references Tap Tapley. Tap worked with Paul at Outward Bound and helped Paul start NOLS. Tap was one of our leaders when I climbed Mt. McKinley in 1971.

FYI I ended up paying $95 for this at the WEA Auction. Pricey indeed but it was for a worthy cause. The proceeds of the auction go to the WEA scholarship fund in my mother's memory.
